Maria’s Journey: From Abandonment to Teacher
Maria’s Journey: From Abandonment to Teacher
Introduction
When Maria arrived at Restoring Children International (RCI) at just 10 years old, she barely spoke. She was withdrawn, fearful, and had never stepped inside a classroom. Years of abandonment and instability had stolen her childhood and her confidence.
Today, at 23, Maria stands at the front of a classroom as a qualified teacher, guiding children who once faced the same struggles she did. This is Maria’s journey—from fear to hope, from abandonment to purpose.
Her Background and Arrival at RCI
Maria grew up in extreme poverty. After losing her parents at a young age, she was passed between relatives who struggled to care for her. With no access to education and little sense of security, Maria learned early how to survive—but not how to dream.
When she arrived at RCI, she was undernourished, emotionally closed off, and far behind academically. Trust did not come easily. But for the first time, Maria had a safe place to sleep, regular meals, and adults who showed her consistent love.
Challenges She Faced
Maria’s early years at RCI were not easy. She struggled to communicate, had difficulty concentrating, and often doubted her own worth. Sitting in a classroom for the first time was overwhelming.
There were moments when Maria wanted to quit—when learning felt too hard and the past felt too heavy. But RCI staff remained patient, offering counseling, encouragement, and steady support.
Turning Points and Growth
One key turning point came when a teacher noticed Maria’s determination. Despite her struggles, Maria never stopped trying. She began staying after class, asking questions, and slowly believing that she could learn.
As her confidence grew, so did her voice. She began participating in group activities, making friends, and discovering talents she never knew she had. For the first time, Maria started imagining a future beyond survival.
Education Journey
Maria progressed through primary and secondary school with strong academic improvement. Education became more than learning—it became freedom.
With encouragement from RCI, Maria set a bold goal: to attend university. Through scholarships and continued mentorship, she successfully graduated high school and later completed her university degree in education.
Current Life and Career
Today, Maria is a teacher, serving children in her own community. She is known for her patience, compassion, and deep understanding of children who come from difficult backgrounds.
Maria doesn’t just teach subjects—she teaches hope. She reminds her students daily that their past does not define their future.
Her Message to Donors
“RCI didn’t just give me a home—they gave me a future I never dreamed possible.”
— Maria S., Graduate 2018
Maria’s life is living proof of what love, education, and consistent support can do.
